Liminal Spaces on Flanders Fields (29/01/2010)

New Zealand documentary photographer Di Mackey and Belgian panoramic photographer Marc Dirkx have teamed up in an attempt to capture the liminal nature of Flanders Fields, Belgium.

Together they have explored the concept of liminality, the betwixt and between of these WW1 battlefields.

The Westhoek has become a special place where the past informs the present and the present nurtures the past.

It is the diggers, historians and enthusiasts of today who cater to the families of the boys who never returned from that terrible war of 1914-1918 and in turn, the families, the various militaries and governments created monuments so that the huge sacrifices made on this small area will never be forgotten.
